Painful Monthly Cycle


I am a 36-year-old woman. My monthly cycles are quite uncomfortable and painful. I would like to know if ayurveda has any recommendations to help reduce discomfort?

According to ayurveda, menstruation is a very natural part of a woman's life. It provides the female physiology the opportunity to periodically detoxify from within. To make the most of this opportunity, ayurveda recommends respecting and working with the monthly cycle rather than fighting it. That means plenty of rest, a proper diet and stress management. Here are some tips that will help.

  • Take it easy! Even if you work, take some quiet time during the day if you can to unwind and rest both mind and body. Take a quiet, relaxing walk or listen to soothing, uplifting music. Go to bed before 10 p.m.
  • A lighter diet is recommended. If you eat mainly light, easy-to-digest foods, your body's resources will be directed more towards the purification, because it will have to work less hard at digestion.
